Getting engaged in Amsterdam is already a once-in-a-lifetime feeling. This proposal brought an entire bridge to a standstill. For a few beautiful minutes, pedestrians, cyclists, cars and even boats seemed to pause while she said yes. Then the bridge erupted in applause, with people congratulating them in four different languages.

We could not stop smiling. It felt surreal. In all my years of photographing engagement proposals, I had never seen Amsterdammers stop cycling to give a couple the space to experience their moment completely. And somehow, on one of the busiest bridges in the area, we created 45 final photographs in only 30 minutes without anyone walking between us during the proposal.

But let me tell you how it began.

Finding the bridge from one photograph

A month earlier, Nelson contacted me with a photograph of the view he wanted. Andrea had visited Amsterdam before and loved it so much that she had always wanted to return. Now they had another trip planned, and he wanted to propose on the bridge shown in that photograph.

As soon as I saw it, I recognised the area. It was along Prinsengracht, near the Nine Streets, which left us with two possible bridges. Berensluis offered the exact view he remembered, but it is also a very busy crossing for pedestrians, cyclists and cars, particularly around 3:00 PM. I suggested the nearby bridge at Reestraat as a calmer alternative. However, the Westertoren was covered during ongoing maintenance, and Nelson preferred to keep the original view.

So we carefully confirmed the time, meeting point and signal for the proposal at Berensluis.

Protecting the surprise on a busy bridge

Andrea knew they would meet a photographer for a picture on the bridge, but she did not know what Nelson was planning. This gave us the perfect explanation for being there. I began with a few classic posed photographs, making everything feel like a normal short photo session. Once Nelson was ready, I gave him the signal. Then he got down on one knee.

For those few minutes, the movement around them stopped. The bridge became part of their celebration, and strangers paused to applaud and congratulate them.
